Vegetarian Sausage Gravy and Biscuits

Nothing says a hearty breakfast better than a good ol’ plate of sausage gravy and biscuits. If you’re looking for a breakfast recipe that’ll fill up your tummy, this is the one for you!

This recipe tastes like homemade heaven…seriously, it’s one of those gravy recipes that’ll have you licking the plate for more! (If you want some gravy with meat, check out this Sausage Gravy recipe!)

And while you can have it vegetarian, you can add any sausage that you want to it as well to give it that meaty protein!

SAUSAGE GRAVY & BISCUITS

One of my very favorite breakfast recipes is sausage, gravy and biscuits! But I don’t always want all the grease and fat that comes with Sausage.  Instead, I’ve started using alternate items to give it a less greasy flavor and taste.

You might be thinking, really? How do you make a recipe based around sausage vegetarian? Let me tell you, friends.

HOW TO MAKE VEGETARIAN SAUSAGE GRAVY

Would you believe me if I told you that you’ll need only 3 ingredients?

You will need:

You can make homemade drop biscuits or just pick up a package of biscuits at the store.  Store bought will work just fine or use a mix.

Fry up your meatless patty options following the package directions. While you’re cooking them, break up the patties into sausage crumbles using your spatula. (You don’t want big chunks in your gravy!)

MorningStar does offer sausage crumbles, but I really like the kick of spice from spicy sausage, so it is worth making your own crumbles. If you prefer mild sausage, either of these two products will work.

While your veggie sausage is frying, prepare your gravy following your gravy packet’s directions. There are lots of different gravy types available. I used a country gravy. Pick one per your preferences. (and have fun changing it up each time you make the recipe!)

Vegetarian Sausage and Gravy

Once your sausage and gravy are both ready, mix the two together to create your sausage gravy. Spoon the gravy over your biscuits and enjoy! It’s seriously that simple!

I was really impressed with the veggie sausage! My first bite I could taste the difference, but every bite that followed was really good and made me forget all about the missing fat. This is a perfect alternative for those that want to skip the meat and the fat.

Q: Can I substitute out the meatless patties for other food items?

A: Of course! You can add onions, mushrooms, or any other veggies as well.

 

Q: What else can I use if I can’t eat flour?

A: Replace the biscuits with a gluten-free mix and you should be good to go!

 

Q: Is this vegetarian sausage and gravy spicy?

A: If you choose a spicy sausage, it will be spicy. Otherwise, it won’t be spicy. You can also add some hot sauce if you want to add spice.
