Keeping it Real: The Reality of Parenthood

This is a sponsored post for which I’ve received free product and/or compensation, but the opinions are 100% my own.

I’ll be honest, before I became a parent, I thought I was an expert on the subject. Observing different parenting styles in public, I’d think to myself, “I would NEVER let my child do that!” or “Wow, I can’t believe that mom let her child wear THAT to the store!” Fast-forward a few years and I find myself telling my children things like, “Be sure to eat your chips before you eat your donut.” and “Please take that dog food out of your mouth.” The reality of parenthood: it isn’t at all what I expected. Every child comes with different quirks, interests, and passions. At times it can be difficult trying to figure out how to effectively reach your children. But as hard as some days may get, parenthood is so much fun and brings so much joy! Can you relate to any of these parenthood realities?

Keeping it Real: The Reality of Parenthood

Your kids become attached to really weird things. Sometimes your kids get attached to things like a worm that they found on the driveway. They play “duck duck goose” with it, make a home for it, feed it, and name the worm. Weeks later after the worm has passed, they still talk about how much they miss that worm.

You will let your kids wear costumes in public just to avoid a fight. Your son will demand to go to the grocery store, playground, mall, etc. dressed as his favorite superhero. You won’t even care because you’re tired and you don’t want contention.

Sometimes you just have to laugh. When your child asks if he can go outside and play in the mud with his rain boots, you shrug your shoulders and say yes. When you look outside and find him IN the mud “playing” with rain boots, you can’t even get mad.

Mopping a few times a week is never enough. If you think you can get away with only mopping every few days, good luck! Try every single meal. Someone ALWAYS spills.

Someone always gets into trouble 2 minutes before you’re supposed to head out the door. Being a parent, you don’t even know what it’s like getting somewhere on time. Just before you’re about to head out the door, you’ll hear the bathtub water running and find your little girl completely soaked.

As any parent can attest, kids will be kids! And that’s why parenthood is so much fun. Although nothing ever quite goes as planned, as a parent, you learn how to roll with the punches. Even though every parent chooses different parenting styles, we are all doing our best to raise happy and healthy kids! We like the gummy vitamins since they are easy to get my kiddo to eat! These were good tips, I have a four year old.

I love this article! I used to teach preschool and the parents would wonder why the kids were monsters at home and angels at school. Sometimes parents have unrealistic expectations of their kids. In a preschool classroom when there are 48 children, if one child is playing superman with an art smock and the other kid is trying to paint their face while another kid is trying to jump off the jungle gym, you go after the one that is most dangerous or could cause the most problems first and then deal with the little fires as they pop up. Kids are going to be kids, and the more you let them express themselves, the more you get to see that they are amazing human beings that aren't "in the process of growing up" but rather are worth getting to know and enjoying for who they are today not who they will be (or who you hope they will be) when they grow up.
