Homemade Banana Cream Pie Recipe

I love a good homemade banana cream pie! I can remember every year my grandma making a huge assortment of pies for Thanksgiving dinner. We’d all sit around and pick out our favorite slice or two of pie while browsing through the sales ads and have a wonderful evening together. Banana Cream was one of my favorites, and still is! This recipe will show you how to make a homemade banana cream pie from scratch – you won’t find a boxed pudding mix here!

Banana Cream Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 9 inch pie crust
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 bananas

Directions:

Make a homemade pie shell, or purchase a pre-made shell and have it ready for filling. You can use a graham cracker crust or a regular pie crust. I prefer regular pie crust with this recipe.

Heat your milk in a large saucepan on a medium heat, stirring constantly until scalded.

Add sugar, flour and salt gradually to your scalded milk. Continue stirring constantly over a medium heat until thick and bubbly. Continue to cook for two minutes once it reaches this point.

In a small bowl, combine your beaten egg yolks with a small portion of the hot mixture until well combined. Then, combine egg mixture with the rest of the pie mixture and continue to cook for one minute longer, stirring constantly.

Remove from heat and blend in butter and vanilla. Let your pie mixture sit until room temperature.

Slice your bananas and scatter the slices along the bottom of the pie shell. Pour your cream pie filling over the top of the bananas. Chill the pie in the fridge for at least one hour.

Top the banana cream pie with the whipped topping, spreading it smooth and using a frosting knife to create a beautiful edge. Spread chopped walnuts around the edge, if desired.

I made this pie for Thankgiving. the flavor was delicious. however not many people ate it because it didn't look appealing. I think I made the mistake of not letting the filling sit until room temperature before putting in the pie crust. it came out a little "soupy" like pudding. also, the cream was heavy on the filling so when you cut a piece it didn't stay firm. I will try this again because it taste really good, but next time I will make the filling in advance and let everyone put their own amount of cream on it!
