I’m ashamed to admit that my least favorite high school class was Financial Literacy. In my teenage brain, “smart financial decisions” were the least of my worries; I didn’t understand why I had to take a class about money management. However this Financial Literacy class ended up teaching me many important financial life lessons. I’m so glad I learned about Financial Literacy early on in life.

Did you know that April is National Financial Literacy Month? In honor of National Financial Literacy Month, TCF Bank, a Minnesota-based national bank, has created a fun quiz to help you find your “financial animal.” To be completely honest, I was a bit afraid to find out my “financial animal.” However, I enjoyed the fun and unique questions in this quiz helping me consider the role of financial literacy in my life.

“I’m a Coyote. I’m a crafty scavenger, always on the hunt for a bargain. My ideal day is spent digging in the couch cushions for spare change, clipping coupons and scouring the web for promo codes. It can be a lot of work, but it’s totally worth it for the sense of accomplishment I feel after scoring a killer deal.”

This description fits me perfectly! I know I may be a little weird, but I love creating my monthly Excel budget spreadsheet. I rarely buy anything that’s not on sale. Walking into a store, I always go straight to the back of the store to find the bargains. Every week before grocery shopping, I clip my coupons – saving money makes me SO happy. Yes, it takes a lot of time, but I enjoy saving money!

Now that I have a son, financial literacy takes on a whole new meaning. Luckily, TCF Bank offers a Financial Literacy Resource Center to help simplify financial concepts. This tool is perfect as I am exploring saving options for my son’s college fund. With many videos, animations, and games, I am able to better understand finances. My future financial goals include creating a savings plan for my son (and any future children). I feel that with the help of TCF Bank’s Financial Literacy Resource Center, I’ll be able to find the best financial plan for my family.
