DIY Brick Raised Garden Beds

This post is sponsored by The Home Depot. A few years back, we decided to create our own DIY brick raised garden beds. We wanted to give gardening a try, but needed an inexpensive way that would look nice in our backyard. We really love our raised garden beds because they added to the look of our backyard, were easy to build and maintain, and best of all they provide a nice place to sit while you work, weed, and harvest from your garden beds. They are easy to put together and can easily be accomplished in an afternoon.

Prepare the area of your yard where you will be building your brick raised garden beds. Clear and level the ground and measure the area you will be making a garden bed to estimate how many retaining wall bricks you will need. Keep in mind, you can only naturally reach and tend to about 2′ depth. We made our garden beds against our brick fence and made them 4′ deep by 6′ wide. This would allow us to reach into the garden beds from either side, and from the front, to be able to tend to the plants.

Keep in mind that your interior bed size will be a smaller measurement than where the bricks will lie. Purchase a few extra bricks than you think you might need, so you don’t have to run back to Home Depot to make any returns while you’re in the middle of the project.

Next, lay out a first layer of retaining wall bricks to form the first layer of your raised garden bed. When you have a shape you like, add a second row of retaining wall bricks right on top of the first layer.

Now, it’s time to fill in your garden beds. You can use simple fill dirt for the lowest layer or get a quality mix of soil. Either way, it’s a good idea to spruce up your garden beds with a new bag of potting soil with fresh nutrients each new planting season.

When your beds are filled with soil, the fun comes by planting your seeds or plant starts. This year, we started two tomato plant varieties, cilantro, jalapenos, and green bell peppers in our garden beds.
