Choosing Green When We Can

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Green Works. I received a product sample to facilitate my review and promotional item as a thank you for participating.

We are always trying to be more “green” and be responsible about the choices we make in our everyday life. Sometimes, it can feel like a struggle to choose green options because they can be more expensive, but most of the time it is simply a change of habit that can make the biggest difference to the way you live. Here are some of the ways we try to be more green.

Green Child Raising

When we first brought home our brand new baby boy, our first child, there is no way in a million years I would have thought to consider cloth diapers. The idea of them seemed intimidating, like way too much work, and just plain yucky. By the time he was 6 months old, I was a full time cloth diaper user! Now, 4 kids later, I’m still using cloth diapers and really love them! Granted, there are certainly times when I use disposables when travel and such and cloth just isn’t as convenient. Still, I love that I have been able to be so much more green — and save tons of green! I have also taken a much more natural approach in a lot of other children related areas such as using bamboo and natural fibers when we can like in their bedding. We are huge fans of handmade toys and wood toys over plastics. It’s an easy switch to look for wooden toys as they are so much better quality and will last long beyond a plastic alternative.

Green Eating

Another simple change we made was starting a garden. Here in Arizona we garden through the fall and winter months, by summer it is too hot. One year, we grew corn, squash, tomatoes, peppers, garlic, herbs and others. It was so nice to be able to walk out to our backyard, pick some fresh herbs. It also encouraged us to use the items we were growing more frequently in our cooking since they were so readily available. We’re hoping to start up a garden again this year.

Green Homemaking

We try to use green cleaning products and alternatives around our home. I’m always using cloth sandwich and snack bags, for example. We use towels more often than paper towels. These changes aren’t hard to switch to when you just keep the cloth options readily available and alternatives harder to access. There are times I still need the disposable options for heavy grease or when sending snacks off with a friend, for example. Our city has recycling easily available so we recycle what we can. We also try to keep our home green with natural cleaning products. I’m never disappointed by the natural cleaning alternatives that work just as good, if not better, and leave my counter tops free of harsh chemicals!
