Simple Ways to Give Back in Your Community

There are many things you can do to give back to your community. As a busy mom with little kids, it may not be as easy to give back anymore. Don’t feel bad if you can’t spend as many hours volunteering as you may like. There are several little things you can still do to make a big difference. You can even get the kids involved and start teaching them about being charitable.

This post is part of a paid SocialMoms and SUBWAY® Resturants blogging program. All opinions expressed are my own.

Donate Food- Many people donate food around the holidays. The food banks are working all year round though. Most local grocery stores keep a food bank donation box in the store. It’s easy to buy an extra box or two of something and just drop it in on way out. The food you donate goes to help low income families feed their children.

Give used items- If your not using it anymore, it has to go somewhere. Pack it in a bag or box and drop it at your local donation center. This can be a Goodwill, Deseret Industries, Salvation Army or even a donation bin in a parking lot. You can feel good knowing that your used things can be used by someone else who may need it more now.

Eat at SUBWAY® Restaurants- Local SUBWAY® Restaurants in the USA and Canada, have teamed up with several different charities to help give back to communities. Their campaign, #YouShareWeShare, encourages you to share your weekends with SUBWAY® Restaurants and in return, SUBWAY® Restaurants in the Phoenix, Tucson, and Yumaareas will donate up to $58,000 of weekend sales to a local charity. If you eat at SUBWAY® Restaurants from now until August 31st, you can not only eat a delicious meal, but be giving back to your community.

The locally owned and operated SUBWAY® franchise in my area will be donating to the Special Olympics Arizona. The Special Olympics is a program designed to help special individuals explore and develop their capabilities in many different sports and physical activities. What started as a simple day camp in 1962 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, has now become a widely known and participated in annual event.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s vision was, “to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities everywhere, and, in turn, transform the lives of everyone they touch – building a better, more accepting world for all of us”. This program helps to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in many ways. It helps them develop a belief in themselves and gives them the opportunity to be part of their community. The training that goes into participating helps them learn lessons in setting goals, perseverance and endurance. It can be a gateway to developing confidence, being empowered, finding joy and feeling accepted.

Giving back to your community has never been so easy or tasty. There are many different charities assigned to different restaurants including Make-A-Wish, Food Banks, Rescues, and State Park Foundations. Find a local SUBWAY® Restaurant and start giving back today. Head over to like Subway on Facebook to share your thanks for their support of your local community!

What are some of your favorite ways to give back in your community?

  1. Great post! I didn’t know that about Subway! Donating food is a great way to give back and you don’t have to spend a ton of money either. And it’s ALWAYS needed! Not just during the holidays. Our cub scout pack does a food drive every year. We put out paper bags one week asking people to fill them with food items – and then pick them up another week and deliver them to our local food pantry. The boys collect tons of food!

  2. I like to use coupons to get nearly free products that I can donate and I also enter sweepstakes for a hobby and I donate some of what I win.

  3. I did not know that about Subway. I love these ideas! Thank you for sharing them.

  4. We donate money to our county food bank, they have special prices with local grocery stores and can get better deals and more things with money than I can.

  5. I firmly believe in this and have volunteered for eight years at a local senior center. I actually enjoy doing it!

  6. We give to the food bank, we give to the post office when they have their pick up, we donate gently used clothes to the Salvation Army or Rescue Workers, and we eat at Subway along with many other ways we can help. We also help by doing things for the local elderly homes.

  7. I have volunteered my time at one of the food banks and just today, I donated gently worn and new clothing to a teen thrift store and furniture to a furniture thrift store.

  8. We donate a variety of items regularly to Goodwill. I did not realize that Subway had joined other companies to #YouShareWeShare to help charities. We eat at Subway often. Also, its good to know that Subway (in the areas of Phoenix, Tucson, and Yumaareas) will donate up to $58,000 during their weekend sales to a local charity.

  9. This is a great way to give back to the Community by eating at Subway! I always try and give to the food bank in my town! I am concerned about those going hungry, especially children.

  10. It’s very important to give back. There was a time when I was the one in need – I’ve never forgotten that. We make a point of donating whatever we can. It’s also good to help individuals – buying a sandwich and soda for a homeless person – and we have so many in my city.

  11. Great post, nice to see subway feeding those in need; it is always good to feed the needy.

  12. I love Subway and knowing that eating there will help those in need makes it that much better. Just might have to get it for lunch tomorrow!
