Quick and Easy Preschool Calendar Station

Last year I was the room assistant in my son’s preschool. This meant that I went with him to school each day and helped the teacher out with whatever she needed during the school day. Because of this his little sister got to attend as well, even though she was only two. She absolutely adored every minute of it and she learned so much. I don’t know many two year olds who just love trying to sound out words, but she sure does!

I received compensation and samples to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.

Calendar

Fast forward to the beginning of this school year. We are in a new state, my son is at a new school, and his little sister misses the cut off to go to school this year by four days. The poor girl is so heart broken and feels left behind. I decided to spend our time when big brother is at school to have some preschool time of our own at home.

The part of school that she missed most is calendar, so I whipped up this calendar station for our home where we could spend some time each day. I could have turned this into a huge project that took me weeks and lots of money to prepare, but instead I took an hour and made it from stuff I had around the house. She adores it, and I love that it was a quick and frugal solution!

For this project you will need:

  • A Desk Calendar
  • Clip Art Print Outs
  • Sticky Notes
  • A couple packages VELCRO® Brand STICKY BACK® Fasteners

Decide what information you want to cover each morning at calendar time. I chose days of the week, weather, shapes, letters, and colors. Find some clip art to represent each of the items and print them out. I chose to print mine out in black and white and color them myself, it gives them some personality.

If you have a laminator at home, I would run the pieces through there before applying the VELCRO® Brand fasteners to the back.

Decide where you want your calendar station to be in your house. Go ahead and hang up the large calendar and the base pages on the wall using the VELCRO® Brand STICKY BACK® Fasteners. These make it easy to switch out the calendar each year or change out the base pages based on what you choose to teach.  I like to use sticky notes for the days of the week. You can color coordinate them to teach patters, odd and even numbers, etc.

We love using our calendar each morning to start out our day here at home. VELCRO® Brand fasteners make so many things easier during back to school. They are a great way to manage your families hectic schedules, you can use them to make a family calendar, keep track of homework assignments or chores in a spot that is easily viewed by all family members. Or use VELCRO® Brand ONE-WRAP® ties to organize the mess of cords that come with today’s technology.

How do you use VELCRO® Brand fasteners at your house?

The girls tell me they do this in school. I think it's also a great idea to make one at home, so they can practice.

I love when teachers get new classroom tools that help them teach in creative ways! Kids respond to hands-on teaching techniques!

My son would love this calendar. I love the idea of Velcro to allow the kids to change the signs on the station.
