Little Ways to Add Personality to your Kid’s Room!

Our children’s bedrooms are a really special place for our kids. It’s a聽little space in the world that they can call their own. Even if your children share a room, we can still make their bedrooms a place that reflects their personality and helps them to feel comfortable and safe.

My husband and I bought a home before we were married or had any kids, we’ve lived in the same place for 10 full years now. While our family has grown exponentially, our walls haven’t budged. It may not be all the square footage we’d love to have, but it works well for us for now. However, that means we have three boys sharing a room with a triple bunkbed. Giving it that personality that expresses each of our boys can be tricky, but it is still important. Here are some of my tips for adding personality to your kid’s room in just small and simple ways that anyone can do!

Thank you Minted for sponsoring this post. While this was a sponsored opportunity from Minted, all content and opinions expressed here are my own.

1. Picking聽a Theme – Your theme can be as big and bold and you can dream or can be as simple as a color scheme. We’ve done fun themes in each of our rooms including a Winnie the Pooh nursery, Outer space room, and a Mario Brothers bedroom. Let your children help you to pick the theme, if they are old enough to give input. It will empower them knowing they get to have a say and create a room around their interests.

2. Plan聽Your Bedding – Bedding is often such a focal point in a kid’s bedroom. You can go with a perfectly matched set or you can mix and match and play with patterns to add interest. Try to look for bedding that will go beyond just the one single bedroom theme to give you flexibility to change up the theme in the future without having to start from scratch.

3. Personal Items – The tops of their dresser is one perfect spot to show off their favorite items. For my boys, they each have a few special stuffed animals. This isn’t just every stuffed animal they’ve ever owned, but ones that they really cherish and are special to them in someway. When piled up neatly on top of the dresser, they add color, personality, and interest. Other personal items can be stashed in a special place like in a trunk, top dresser drawer, or in a storage tote in their closet. Not everything needs to be out and on display, but you should respect their right to have lots of personal items and give them a place to keep them safe.

4. Make the Room Fun – This may be as simple as stashing a few of their favorite toys in their closet to play with after school. Or, you can be bold and place an interactive rug, train tracks on the wall, or install a slide off their bunk bed. My boys are really into basketball, so it was a super easy addition to hang an over-the-door basketball hoop off their bunkbed!

It’s easy to think they would want complete freedom and flexibility, but the reality is they really want to know what’s coming next and when. Having a written out schedule of your typical day and/or a calendar of your upcoming month helps to keep your child aware of what’s coming up and feel prepared and comfortable for each transition. You can let them get involved and help make their own schedule.

6. Add Personalized聽Art Prints – My favorite way to make my boys rooms really feel completely unique to them is with art and pictures. Beautiful customized prints that you can add their name(s) directly to the print make a really neat, unique addition to any room.

We had this beautiful I Love You So personalized print created for my boys room and it’s absolutely perfect for their space. I love that it reminds them each and every day, without fail, that mom and dad love聽them. We personalized the print to include each of our five boys names, so no one was聽forgotten.

  1. We personalize our kids room with photos and bulletin boards that they decorated themselves. It’s a way they can continually change a room without totally redecorating

  2. Putting up a schedule will really help kids understand their responsibilities! That’s the best way to prepare them for adulthood!

  3. I love your boy’s names on the bottom of that printable, such a cute touch. I am all about the pattern mixing too!

  4. Now that my kids are teenagers i do not have much say of what their rooms look like. I let them have the freedom to decorate as they want as long as the room is some what clean.

  5. What cute ideas. I allow the kids to choose new sheets every few months or so to make the room fresh and make them want to go to bed 馃檪

  6. My daughter’s room looks like Frozen blew up in her room. She has a carpet, bedding and toys galore. She also has a personalized sign of her name hanging in her room.

  7. I think making the room fun is really important. My son is always hanging out in our living room and even our bedroom, but not so much his room. We’ve added little things for him to do in his room so that he starts spending more time in there. He’s only 3 y/o and I don’t want him to think of his room as a boring place.

  8. I think it’s really important for the kids’ personalities to be able to show in their rooms. I know since my nephew got his own room, posters have become a staple for him.
