How To Get Your Child To Brush Their Teeth

1. Involve your child in the process: Take your child to the store with you and allow them to choose their favorite toothbrush and favorite flavor of toothpaste. Choose toothbrush patterns that will excite them.

2. Make brushing a fun experience: Crank up the music and have your child brush their teeth to their favorite tunes. Have your child brush their teeth in fun and creative places – in the bathtub, under the kitchen table, outside, etc. Do whatever it takes to make it a fun time of the day.

3. Encourage early dental hygiene. Starting at an early age, encourage healthy dental habits. This not only includes brushing morning and night, but making sure that your child sees a dentist starting in the toddler stage of life. The earlier you introduce these habits into your child’s life, the less they will fight it. Dental check-ups are recommended every 6 months.

  1. We just had a dental visit with my kids today. Great news for my daughter..not so great with my boys. They have been the ones I struggle to get to brush their teeth. I hope this is a reminder how important it is. We’ll have to be more involved to help get them back into the habit of brushing every day.

  2. Making it fun is a MUST! I allow my kids to choose their toothbrushes and that helps, as well

  3. We used to buy a few different flavors of toothpaste and would let the kids pick what flavor they wanted that day. We did a reward system as well that encouraged them to brush.

  4. We play music when it is time to brush the kids teeth. As long as the music is playing they know they need to keep brushing. They have a teeth chart on the wall they get a stamp every time they brush.

  5. I was lucky and my kids loved to brush their teeth. We had a timer in the bathroom to help them know when they have been brushing long enough.

  6. My kids love brushing their teeth! I at cully never have to make them do it, and they remind me.

  7. I still have to remind my 10 year old daily!!!! If I didn’t she wouldn’t do it. Thanks for sharing the tip. I need them!

  8. Oh my word – he is adorable in that last photo! I love it! I appreciate the tips too – I have a crazy little 5 year old that I have to convince 3x/day to brush his teeth.

  9. I’ve been brushing my kid’s teeth since before she had teeth. I guess since I did that she like the feeling of brushing her teeth. She does it willingly. Only thing I’m working on now is getting her to NOT swallow the toothpaste.

  10. Where was this for my sister when my nephew was little. He’s 14 now, so brushing isn’t an issue, but when he was little it was THE battle.

  11. Our son always just wanted to do what mommy and daddy did, so he usually would brush his teeth. Now we are trying to get him to brush a little better since there have been cavities!

  12. We always kind of made a game out of it. I would brush for 10 seconds and they would – and so on.
