Give your Toddler Relief from Congestion

This time of year it feels like every little kid has a runny nose. It’s pretty common to see moms running to the rescue with tissue when a child sneezes. The older kids (usually) can blow their noses and get a bit of relief. Unfortunately, toddlers have a harder time dealing with congestion.

I was provided compensation and samples in exchange for this post.  All opinions are my own.

Give your toddler relief from congestion

You can help give your toddler relief from congestion by following these tips.

Saline

Saline solution is your friend.  You can pick up a bottle of saline solution at the drug store, and combined with the amazing suction of a nasal aspirator, suck a ton of the offending mucus from your little’s nose. Unfortunately, your toddler won’t usually be happy about this situation,  but if it helps them breathe later, it’s worth a bit of a tussle.

Hydration

I’ve brought this up before, but keeping hydrated is extremely helpful to the body. Also, it helps keep mucus thin so it’s easier to get out. Pick up a special new sippy cup to serve them juice.  Keeping hydrated is also important on the nose and lips. Use petroleum jelly (aka Vaseline) around their nostrils and on their lips to keep them from getting chapped.

Steam

Steam helps loosen up congestion.  I like to bring in some toys to the bathroom and have my kiddo play while I take a long hot shower. The steam helps them and the shower helps you!

Humidifier

Use a cool mist humidifier it your toddler’s room.  Elevate their mattress on their bed, by using a pillow or blanket rolled up and placed underneath.  The cool mist and elevation will help them sleep.

Over the Counter Help

For children 2 and older, a over the counter decongestant is an option.  I know I have been afraid to use decongestants on my toddlers because of the side effects. When looking for something to help my toddler’s congestion, I turn to the brand that Swiss mother’s have been trusting for 30 years..Similasan.

Give your toddler relief from congestion

Similasan offers products formulated with natural active ingredients to help boost the body’s natural defenses and fight back. Similasan contains no harsh chemicals and has no known side effects, unlike other over the counter products. Similasan gives natural temporary symptomatic relief from ailments of the eyes, ears, nose, head, and chest.  Similasan is gentle enough for children 2 and up and contains no dyes or alcohol. No getting a red stain from a bit of dribbled cough syrup out of jammies.

Similasan Kids Cough & Fever Relief helps temporarily relieve symptoms like coughing, hoarse throat, congestion and even fever. Kids Cold & Mucus Relief takes on the head cold by offering an expectorant to help get the mucus up with productive coughs.

I was provided with samples of both the  Kids Cough & Fever Relief and Kids Cold & Mucus Relief, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. My 2 year old came down with a head cold which was making her miserable.  The congestion was making it hard for her to nurse to sleep, which was making her frustrated. After a round of saline and suction, I gave her the Kids Cold & Mucus Relief syrup. I was immediately impressed as I poured it on to the cute measuring spoon that accompanied it. Although it was a syrup, it poured easily, closer to water than the viscus fluid from other cold relief products. Although I couldn’t get her to easily take it (thanks to an older sister afraid of all medicine type products, my 2 year old has developed the same fear) once I got it in her mouth it went down with one swallow and no spit up. That is a huge accomplishment. After her dose, I am pleased to report that nursing was a bit easier and sleep was finally to be had.

Give your toddler relief from congestion

Similasan Kids Cough & Fever Relief and Kids Cold & Mucus Relief are available for ages 2 and up (even 12+!). Now you can also get Junior strength, for ages 6-11 in a handy quick dissolve tablet. My 8 year old can asset that it “tastes good.” The tablet easily dissolves in your their mouth, or can be dissolved in a glass of water…for those children that fight everything!
