Simple Ideas to Save Money on Kids Clothes

It’s a very rare occasion when I actually pay full price for kids clothing. The only time I tend to really splurge and not look for sales is if we are looking for outfits to coordinate for family pictures or if they need a special occasion outfit and I didn’t plan ahead. Both of these scenarios are pretty few and far between, though. Nearly always, you can wait and find a good sale or promotion to purchase kids clothes for much less than retail.

Here are some of the places I look to save money on kids clothes:

Sales – If you want to stick to your favorite retailers, only shop for clothes that are currently on sale. Even a 25% off sale can make a big difference in your clothing budget.

Clearance – Most clothing retailers have a clearance rack tucked at the back of the store. Weave your way back to the back of the store and then work your way forward if they didn’t have what you were looking for on clearance.

Garage Sales – A garage sale can be completely hit or miss and the seasons can really limit your buying opportunities, too, but if you happen to find a gem of a garage sale with well taken care of clothes you can find some pretty good deals.

Hand-me-downs – Pass clothes down between your kids or swap with friends as their children outgrow clothing to beef up your wardrobe! Even just using some of the clothes for play clothes can save a lot of your budget for picking up the essentials.

Stocking Up – Buying one-size up can let you take better advantage of clearance and sales and you’ll have the clothes you need on hand when they out grown their clothes over night. When stocking up, try your best to plan sizes accordingly for the seasons and also to stick to staples rather than really trendy styles which may be out of fashion by the time your kids grow into the clothes.

Consignment Shops – The great thing about consignment shops is they sort through the worn out and tacky clothes so you can find clothes that look like new or only with very little wear at a fraction of the cost.

My Experience at Moxie Jean

I can usually find cool character t-shirts and other really basic styles in stores for pretty inexpensive, but finding jeans and dress shirts on sale is a much bigger challenge! Jeans are typically $15+ and dress shirts always make me bawk at the tags showing $20+! Since both jeans and dress shirts for church are essential for my kids wardrobes, I turned to Moxie Jean to see how their selection and prices would compare.

It was really easy to browse and pick through their selection and find some styles we liked and the filters made it easy to see only styles that would fit my oldest. I was pleased to find picks that were easily half off or more the price of in-store retailer pricing.

When our picks arrived, they looked fantastic with very, very minimal wear. We did have one shirt that was too small and one that was too large. They were both size M/8, but different retailers sizes are quite different. This wasn’t a big deal for us as I’ll pass the too small onto my younger son and hang onto the too large until it fits a bit better. I will pay a bit better attention to different brand sizes in the future, though.
