Back to School Tips: Prepare the Night Before

Load the Backpack – Load up their backpack the night before with all the parts that you can. Binders, notebooks, folders, pens, pencils and the other basics. Make sure all these basics make their way right back into the backpack after homework.

Lay out School Clothes – Picking out their clothes or uniform for class the next day the night before will ensure that they have everything they need. There won’t be any surprises of no matching socks, or whatever it may be. This also helps to save a lot of time as trying to match and pick out an outfit is already taken care of.

Teach Responsibility – Help teach your child to care for their own responsibilities. Start with small steps like showing your children how to lay out their clothes for the next day, picking out a snack for school, or filling up their water bottle. Letting them take over the responsibility for these simple tasks helps balance the tasks so you can focus on the rest of the last minute needs.

Freeze Your Sandwiches – You can make lunches ahead of time and ready for the whole week. You can make PB&J sandwiches for the week all at once and freeze them. Just lightly spread peanut butter on both slices of bread. Then, the jelly or jam can go in the middle. Layering a sandwich like this will make it ready for the freezer without the bread going soggy. Pull out the sandwich the night before in cold temperatures or the morning before school in warm climates and it will be ready by lunch!

Plan for Breakfast – A simple menu or even just a list of breakfast options can make this meal much easier. Trying to figure out what to make for breakfast when you’re rushed in the morning can make the morning stressful. Pick out a meal the night before so you can allow the time you will need to prepare your meal in the morning. Or, have easy breakfast options available your child can pick from in the morning.   When you take a few minutes the night before school, you’ll find you can enjoy a peaceful moment in the morning without the constant running around to make it out the door. When we’re not stressed in the morning, the whole day goes better. We have been able to leave with a few minutes to spare making even the drive to school less stressful.

What are your favorite back to school tips and tricks to prepare ahead of time so you’re mornings are off to a great start?
