3 Tips to Keep Kids Safe in the Pool

Safe in the Pool

1. Know Your Child’s Abilities – Don’t assume just because your child has taken swimming lessons that they are now a confident swimmer. Similarly, don’t believe your child can swim without assistance just by taking their word for it. A simple swim test is often done with the supervision of a life guard to assess your child’s ability to swim the length of the pool and buoy themselves up in the water. Along with their ability, be careful to watch for signs that your child is getting tired.

Swim Safety 2. Within Arm’s Reach – Always keep your young children that cannot pass a swim test within arm’s reach. It takes just a second to go under water and you may not recognize that a child is struggling to stay afloat if they are not near by as it often looks similar to playing.

Swim Safety 3. Use a Personal Flotation Device – A Personal flotation device (PFD) can offer an extra layer of protection to keep your child’s face up and out of the water if used properly. It gives nervous children more confidence to play in the water and offers an extra layer of protection to parents. A PFD shouldn’t be relied on or used without adult supervision, but can help add extra protection while in the pool.

Swim Safety Puddle Jumpers are a great alternative to traditional life jackets for kids. They give children more roam to move and swim while still providing protection. They are Coast Guard approved and come in lots of fun colors and styles to match your child’s personality so they want to wear their flotation device. This helps give parents the piece of mind to keep their children safe in the water while keeping the safety tips above.

Pool Safety Puddle Jumpers are approved for use with children between 30-50lbs. This is a key age when they want independence in the pool and don’t want to feel leashed to the steps but are still learning how to swim independently. Both my 4 and 6 year old boys fit within this weight range. They’ve spent lots of time in the pool, but even so they still can’t swim independently. 1. Wow! Great blog! We just build a pool in our backyard a month back. My kids just love it.We have got them a personal floating device. But watching them closely while they are in the pool, is the best safety thing we could do. Also do keep all their pool toys away when they are done playing. As little kids have a tendency to throw them in the pool when we are not watching.

  2. I went through a stage of going to the pool with two small kids and the only way I could have the kids save is to have them wearing safety vests

  3. We just bought our puddle jumpers! Hoping to hit the local pool (they allow young kids to use them!!) and even the lake several times this summer, so we need them.

  4. We NEVER hit the water without our puddle jumpers! They are seriously amazing and my kids love them too!

  7. My daughter loves the water. I always have to make sure that she is close by, because she has a tendency to take off into the water. She is just learning how to swim, so These tips are very important.

  8. Flotation devices are great for the learning stages. They really do help the kids get used to movement in the water.

  9. When my kids were younger i always made sure there was a life guard on duty when the kids would go swimming. The water wings are a great way to add some security.

  10. I never take my eyes off of them. HA! I have three older kids, who are all great swimmers, yet I still worry. Too much can happen… Thanks for sharing

  11. My kids only go in pools when there are multiple adults in the pool and watching the area. They wear like 4 different floats by choice because they are still so uneasy about the water which is sorta deep at 5.2 feet.

  12. These are all great tips. I think we all need to watch them really closely!

  13. These are some great tips. I really want my son to take swimming lessons this summer.

  14. Water safety is always at the top of my list whenever we go swimming or to the lake. We always have the kids wear a life jacket and always keep a eye on them.

  15. Oh those puddle jumpers look really neat! Carter wears a life jacket, but I might try those this year. The life jackets do confine them quite a bit, would love for him to have more movement. Great tips! Keeping them within an arms reach is so true. Only takes a few seconds!
