Did you know that your baby’s first year of life is when their brain is doing the very most development? While sometimes it may feel silly to chat with an infant that can’t respond to you with words, it is important to realize that this is a key time in their life to interact and create that bond! Here are 5 key ways you can interact with your baby every day to help develop their brain and build that relationship!

5 Easy Ways to Interact With Your Baby

Talk – Don’t ever underestimate the power of language. Babies learn by hearing us talk. Just speak out loud about the things you are doing. Read your magazine aloud or talk about prepping dinner. Whatever it may be, keep a dialogue going and talk to your baby.

Play – It’s not just fun, it’s crucial! Playtime is learning time for infants! Let them play with a rattle, balls, a mirror, or other toys perfect for a baby. Or, get creative and use everyday items from around your home like tupperware!

Sing – Don’t worry about a perfect pitch, just get singing! Bust out to your favorite tunes on the radio as you drive or start a dance party during fussy time in the evenings to settle everyone down and connect with your baby. You can also sing songs with interactions like “this little piggy” or “twinkle, twinkle little star”.

Cuddle – Cuddling very often leads to my most favorite moments with my baby. It gives a calm, peaceful time to just snuggle up together and pass smiles back and forth. You can cuddle your infant while sleeping or awake, they love the time connecting!

Read – Pull out soft cloth books or a collection of board books and read to your child. Reading makes it easy to talk to your baby when you’re not sure what to say. It also lets you cuddle up together as you read. It will instill a love of books early in their life as well. Some of our favorites are the fold out tummy time books by Usborne Books & More and Animally!

  7. Such a great post! My 3 yer old had the vocab of a 5 year old- it’s INSANE- but her pedi thinks it’s because we read, sing and I NEVER shut up! Her love of talking and interacting is amazing, and I hope our second is like that too!

  8. Oh this makes me have baby fever so bad! I miss having those cuties crawling around and exploring. We loved playing with blocks together.

  9. Interacting is a life long process. I have loved and enjoyed every age. My girls are now all in there 20’s but when they are sick or just need Mom. I am where they turn even if its to just brush their hair or say its ok. Tomorrow’s another day. I would not have it any other way.

  10. My favorite way to interact with my baby even to this day (she’s 2.5 yrs now) is to sing and dance with her. If you put on any form of music, she will just start dancing and singing along if she can. It is the cutest thing to see. Sometimes after dinner, I will put on Pandora and we would all just dance and sing together. It has always been one of the ways we have bonded as mom and daughter.

  11. My sister used to do pretty much all of these with her kids when they were babies. They had such a good time doing whatever.

  12. I miss having little people around 🙂 Lucky for my 2 of my sisters in law are pregnant right now, so my baby fix will be met very soon!

  13. My favorite ways to interact with my baby is through music, and always reading to them.
