10 Over-The-Counter Morning Sickness Remedies

If there is one subject in which I claim to be an expert: morning sickness! I was one of the very few individuals that got to experience morning sickness 24 hours a day for an entire 9 months. In fact, I started throwing up the day before I found out I was pregnant and continued to throw up as I welcomed my son into the world. During this 9 month period, I was put on home healthcare with a medication pump that delivered anti-nausea medication around the clock. Although the medication worked wonders, I still found myself sick most of the day. This nausea inspired me to look up every morning sickness remedy in the book! Although my morning sickness wasn’t “cured” until the birth of my son, through my research, I was able to find a few tricks to help take the edge off my nausea. I must say, the 9 months that my son has been alive has more than made up for my 9 months of morning sickness. Hopefully this list will prove beneficial to those in my similar situation!

10 Over-The-Counter Morning Sickness Remedies

1. Ginger-ale – I found that the name brand soda had a better effect on my nausea.
2. Ginger tablets
3. Swimming – I don’t know what it was about the water, but relaxing in the pool helped me find a few minutes of relief!
4. B6 tablets
5. Bonine + half tablet of Unisom – Bonine is a “less drowsy” form of motion sickness medication. When I combined it with half of a tablet of Unisom (a sleep aid), I felt relief without feeling too tired.
6. Stay away from strong smelling foods.
7. Chew mint gum – mint helps ease your gag reflex.
8. Gummy Vitamins – Because taking my prenatal vitamins made me extra sick, my doctor suggested that I took gummy vitamins. Taking gummy vitamins still helped me get the vitamins and minerals I needed without causing me to throw them up. Of course, consult with your doctor before discontinuing your regular vitamins.
9. Eat nuts and peanut butter – these high protein foods help decrease nausea in some women.
10. Eat small and frequent meals – don’t let your stomach become too empty or too full. I carried crackers EVERYWHERE with me! Eating crackers before I fell asleep and right as I woke up helped me not feel as nauseated.

Consult with your doctor to determine if these morning sickness remedies are right for you. I did not receive any compensation for this post. The view expressed above are my own.
