Save Money on Christmas: Six Top Tips

Christmas is an expensive festival for most families, what with having to purchase presents and cook elaborate feasts. On an average, for a family of four, Christmas expenditure can be as high as $1,000, which is unquestioningly a quite a big amount.

If you often find yourself needing loans at Christmas time for buying gifts for your kids, you could benefit from some useful financial advice. There are so many ways in which you can make Christmas what it is supposed to be- full of fun and merrymaking. All you need is to do is to make small changes.

1.  Start Saving NOW

Saving money for Christmas is such a pain, especially for those under stress due to difficult economic times; but however difficult it may seem to be, you have to do so if you want to make Christmas a memorable time for your children. Sometimes, it is just a case of better management of your earnings. You may be earning enough, but you may need to brush up on your saving skills. Commit a small amount, even if it is $50 every week, for spending on Christmas gifts for kids. A better idea would be to open an online savings account and use it for Christmas shopping. The earlier you start, the better.

2.  Do You Really Need the TV These Two Months?

November and December are busy months for most of us. Holiday travel, shopping and other things associated with the holiday season hardly leave enough time for watching TV. Even if you are TV buff, paying for services that you don’t really use does not make sense. Downgrading premium TV services for these two months will allow you to put something extra in the designated savings account.

3.  Save Money on Entertainment

Having a good time with friends and family does not always mean that you have to go out and spend lavish sums of money. For the next two months, make sure that whatever entertainment you need is at home, and not outside. If you are fond of watching movies, you can have a cinematic experience at home by calling your friends over. Another option is to call friends over for poker sessions or board games if you like. And if you tell everyone to bring some snacks to pass you can even save more.

4.  The Early Bird Catches the Worm

A bit of foresight can save you a lot of money and allow you to get presents that your children have always wanted. It may appear odd, but start shopping for Christmas in May, June, or right through the year. Nearly every retailer has an end of season clearance sale. With a little bit of patience, you will be able to extend the value of every dollar you spend. Another way of saving money on Christmas gifts for your spouse, children, and extended family is to search for online sales. Look for discount sites and discount coupons for great deals.

5.  Choose the Right Gift

One of the best ways to save money on presents for children is by choosing necessities as gifts. It may not appear as a gift in the strict sense of the word, but this is a perfect solution if you are on a tight budget. For example, you could gift clothes that your kids will need in the near future. Remember to select a slightly larger size if it is for an infant or toddler. This will also allow you to make the most of end of season sales.

6.  Make a Shopping List

A little bit of organization will not do you any harm, but may result in substantial savings. We often tend to get carried away when we are out shopping. To avoid impulsive purchases, take the time to prepare a list of presents for each member of the family. Since you have applied your mind to it, you will not only remain within your budget, but also ensure that your kids get what they really like.

Hey, attention! Christmas is just a month away. Do you want your credit card being racked up again? Absolutely NO! So just utilize these money saving tips and do it right now. I am sure they could offer you a wonderful Christmas holiday without making a huge sacrifice on your lifestyle.

I try to shop all year round. At the end of winter I can buy winter clothes in bigger sizes for the following Christmas as presents at really reduced prices of course you have to have left over money. I usually have a Christmas Club.

Thanks for the tips. It is definitely hard to buy gifts with the way things are going. I do NOT own a credit card so everything has to be bought as I get the money. I like it this way, but am also worried that time is running out on me.

It's so good to hear people talk about saving up & being careful at Christmas time - instead of "Just put it on a credit card!"
