5 New Mom Gifts She’ll Desperately Need (& Appreciate!)

Shopping for new mom gifts for upcoming baby showers can be overwhelming. There are so many fun and interesting items in the baby aisle and it’s hard to know what is a good investment, or a gift she will actually use and appreciate, and what items to skip.

As a mom of 5 cute little boys, I went through all the phases. With my first we had two baby showers – one with family and one with friends. We received some really nice gifts, and some that were thoughtful, but ultimately not at all useful and were eventually given away.

With my 2nd baby I ended up acquiring even more baby gear than with my first. Most of it just took up space, and didn’t really get used. By my 3rd baby I was finally a pro. I paired down on all the extra and unnecessary and just kept around what we would actually use, love, and that would be helpful in raising a baby.

With all that advice in mind, today I’m going to share my top 5 new mom gifts to consider when shopping for your friends, family, and loved ones new arrivals!

New Mom Gifts She'll Desperately Need

5 New Mom Gifts She’ll Desperately Need

1. Diapers, Diapers and more Diapers! The best gift for new moms you could possibly give is diapers. The new baby will go through approximately one of the largest size boxes of diaper each month, or a regular size package once a week. That means, the new mom will need up to 52 packages of diapers just for the first year!

gifts for a new mom

This week is a great time to stock up on Luvs diapers at Walmart with a great special offer in this Sunday’s paper! All the details on that below. But consider sizing up when you shop! I like to shop for Size 2 or Size 3 diapers, as many guests will naturally pick newborn and Size 1 diapers, that the new baby will quickly outgrow.

If the mom-to-be has other children, then there is even more of a need for diapers and less need for any of the extra essentials which she likely already has on hand.

2. Often Forgotten Medical Supplies – The first time the new little baby is sick, she’ll be so grateful for the gift of basic health supplies that we don’t often think to gift. Those include items like a thermometer, something to clear their nose, baby medicines, and nursing supplies like nipple cream, too!

3. Baby Clothes – Shopping for baby clothes is probably the most fun gift to pick out. But keep in mind that babies grow very, very quickly. Most people will gift the new mom newborn and 0-3 month sized clothing. Help your friend out by choosing clothing in the 3-6 month size or in 6-9 months size so that it’s on hand and ready to grow into.

Sometimes, those growth spurts happen in what seem like overnight and they may not have many options in the next clothing size. You’ll be the lifesaver by still getting to pick out cute clothes for the new baby, but picking something practical that will really help the new mom in her time of need!

4. New Baby Gear – A new mom will need to order some basic gear that is essential with a new baby. Some of these are super helpful, and things she will desperately need, and others should be skipped entirely.

These larger baby gear items are perfect for pitching it as a group gift or for soon-to-be grandparents to splurge on. These might include an infant car seat, crib, stroller, baby monitor, and a swing.

When looking for strollers, pick a high quality but compact and lightweight stroller. This will get way more use and be much more accommodating to the variety of needs of a new mom than any other type of stroller.

5. A Baby Carrier – A baby wrap, sling, or other carrier will be a lifesaver for a new mom. It will give her the freedom and flexibility to get things done around the home, with her newborn snuggled close. This helps with fussy babies and restless mommies.

It will be priceless for her for years to come, and even with a baby #2 comes along to help extend her use of a single stroller and be able to skip that bulky and heavy double stroller.

New Mom Gifts to Skip

While there are some amazing new mom gifts she’ll definitely appreciate, there are also some baby items that really can be skipped completely. These items generally get very little use and take up a lot of storage space. Or, they may be something that the new mom simply receives way too much of and ends up not necessarily needing.

– Bibs – these often see very little use until the baby starts eating solids

– Pacifiers – babies will usually have a preference

– Baby Shoes – while these look darling, little ones will just kick them off and they’ll grow out of the quickly

– Bottles – if the mom-to-be is planning to bottle feed and has specifically asked for a certain brand, these can be an okay gift, but in general these will fall in the same category as pacifiers. The baby will need a specific bottle type and it may be best to leave this for the new mom to pick out.

– Diaper Bag – These days, there are many large purses than function just as well as a diaper bag and help mom not feel so frumpy. Diaper bags are also an important style choice for mom, as it will stay by her side for years!

– Receiving Blankets – Mom will likely receive way more of these than she really needs.

– Diaper Pail – A diaper pail seems like  a good idea, but if you’ve ever seen the bag that comes out the other end when it’s time to change it you know why you should skip this gift!

– Infant Bath – This big and bulky extra will likely only be used a couple of times, and really can be skipped all together.

– Bouncy Seat – The new mom won’t need both a bouncy seat and a swing. In my experience, the swing is a better investment, unless the new mom has very limited space. The swing often even has options that act similarly to a bouncy seat. Such as vibration options and different swinging directions to mimic a bouncy seat.

Diapers are the Best of all New Mom Gifts

It's definitely a good idea to gift larger sized diapers and clothing. I know with my son he didn't stay in the newborn size for long and there were some outfits he didn't even wear.

These are all awesome gift ideas for a new mom. The diapers are a big help. In my family, everytime there is a new mom, we help out by cooking for them. Motherhood can be overwhelming for the first few weeks and helping the new moms with the household chores is a great gift idea too.

I always appreciated having a variety of sizes of clothes and diapers on hand. It was like the gifts that kept on giving.

I never used receiving blankets either. Diapers were ALWAYS appreciated - even if I had too many of the same size, I could exchange them.
