Kid Friendly Science: Paper Bag Lungs

Kids, by nature, are curious. I love to listen to my kids talk and explore life. They see everything with such a fresh perspective and innocence. It is so refreshing. As a parent, the word I hear most often in my home is, why. Why is it always cold in winter? Why is his mom taller than you? If it is winter in Hawaii too, than why is it warm? Why does my belly blow up when I breathe? All day long I answer these questions. I really should say all day long I look up answers to these questions, because I certainly don’t know all the answers.

I received compensation and samples for this post. All opinions are my own.

Paper Bag Lungs

The last question actually sparked a project that I am happy to share. As I explained how lungs work to my little boy, his eyes got wide and he stared at me in confusion. Try as I may I just couldn’t make him understand. There are a ton of experiments out there to demonstrate how lungs work, but we chose this simple Paper bag method.

Start by labeling your bags as the right and left lung, then draw the bronchioles and alveoli.

Kids need information presented in several forms before they really understand how something works. The need to hear about it, they need to see it, and they need to participate in a hands on activity to really solidify their knowledge of that subject. It would be great to have activities like this on hand for teaching my kids everything they need to know. Know Yourself knows this.

Developed by an expert team of writers and educators, Know Yourself’s content explains the ABCs and 123s of one’s anatomy, physiology and psychology in an easy to learn way. Becoming self literate and having working knowledge of how your body and mind function is imperative for making good decisions and choices. It gives your child higher self esteem, makes them them more confident, and makes them less fearful.

The Know Yourself Adventure Series takes your child on a monthly voyage through time and uses historical figures to teach them important lessons about how the body works. Our first box helped us learn more about our five senses in Greece by Aristotle himself! We learned so much together as we explored the different roles seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, and tasting take on in our everyday life. Plus, the Dr. Bonyfied books are absolutely fascinating.

We are loving our experiments that came with our Know Yourself Box. We have already tested our taste buds by exploring greek food. Hummus is something we always have around the house, but my son was much more eager to try some new flavors because the idea came from his box. I am really looking forward to completing the other projects in our box like:

  • Ear Power: What Happens to your hearing in the absence of sight?
  • More Than Meets The Eye: A series of optical illusions.
  • Does Your Nose Help? Figure out how your senses of taste and smell are connected.

So much learning in one Know Yourself Box!

A subscription to Know Yourself Adventure Series is the perfect gift for kids. Over the course of the year they will receive 12 shipments- each containing an issue of their comic, science projects, historical lessons, and healthy recipes all delivered right to your doorstep. Think about Know Yourself for your kids.
