Finding Time to Fit in Exercise

As a mom of 5 kids, I am always busy. I tell myself all the time “I don’t know how you do it”. I drive my kids to school; take them to after school activities, church, the works. Honestly I spend more time in the car than I do actually speaking to my husband.

I received samples and compensation for this post. All opinions are my own.
Finding Time to Exercise
Because of my crazy schedule,-I find it really hard to fit in time for my work outs. I’ve really had to brainstorm about how to do it, but here are some ways I find time to fit in some exercise.
Wake Up!
The easiest way to fit in a run, or any other exercise, is to get up before the kids are awake. My fall schedule starts soon, which means a 430am wake up, 5am to 6am run, and come back and get the kids up for school.  Believe it or not, you will feel more energetic during the day when you wake up early to exercise and won’t regret the muffin for breakfast.
Clean Up Time
If you have as many toys as I do littering my floor daily, you will also have the same opportunity I do to work in some squats. Adding squats, lunges, jumping jacks, etc to your daily house chores will kill two birds with one stone. You will get stronger and you will tone muscles, while making your home sparkle.
Take the Kids Outside
I’ve taken my kids out for a bike ride as I ran. It’s not ideal for pace training, or even running a ton of miles, but  it’s a fun workout. Your kids will love cheering you on as you run or walk.  My girls love to take turns holding my phone to watch the run tracking app count the number of miles.
Dance
Throw a dance party in your home with the kids. Throw on some music, and get to dancing. Show them some of your favorite moves and learn some of theirs. You can really work up a sweat while dancing-and you will have a blast doing it.
Dress for Success
I find that if I put on my workout clothes right away, I am more likely to exercise.  It’s a constant reminder to yourself that you need to hit the gym.
Involve a Friend
Host a play date/exercise time at your house. When the kids are playing, pop in an exercise tape and sweat with a friend. Having an exercise buddy will help keep you motivated.  The kids will enjoy the playtime and you can enjoy exercising and chatting with another adult.

No matter what exercise option you choose,  it’s important to exercise safely.  If you do injure yourself, make sure you take care of it right away.  I use ACE™ Brand Elastic Bandages whenever I need to wrap up a sore knee or sprained ankle.  ACE™ Brand offers a complete line of elastic compression bandages, hot and cold therapy products, and knee, ankle, elbow, wrist and back braces, wraps and supports.

  1. These are all great tips! I am basically incapable of waking up early (total night owl) so I just try to fit in a workout during nap time if I can 🙂

  2. I think I would be a wreck if I got up that early! Now that I am a working mom, I’m having trouble staying consistent with my exercise. Involving the kids is a good idea though.

  3. I usually walk 2-3 miles every morning. My daughter and I leave the house at 6:30am and get home around 8. We homeschool so this is her P.E. time

  4. I’m grateful if I can find time to exercise even once during the week. It’s important for my health, but I can never seem to carve out time for it.

  5. It’s really important to exercise. It keeps you sharp, and it keeps your energy level up. It’s just so darn hard to find time to do it.

  6. Fantastic tips. I really need to wake up earlier and fit in more exercise. I always plan to do it and then don’t…..I need to kick myself in the butt.

  7. If I don’t go to the gym first thing in the morning, I won’t go at all… I need to just go and get it out of the way… HA! I love that Ace has come out with such a great elastic bandage…

  8. I need to find more time to fit in exercise, I have been neglecting it lately. Thanks for the reminder.

  9. I love the new clip on the ACE bandage. These are great tips to help me get started working out again. I know I need to, but it’s hard to find time to start that routine.

  10. For the past year I have set aside time to walk each evening. I have walked through blizzards, hurricanes bad rain storms. It keeps my accountable.

  11. That looks like something I need to do. Sometimes I just don’t feel good and don’t want to, but I need to suck it up.

  12. Oh that looks like a great improvement. I love that they updated, I could never keep it latched on with the old clips!

  13. Exercise has been something that has been on my back burner for far too long. We just started walking with a new neighbor. Twice a week right after we get the kids on the bus. I take my preschooler with us in a stroller so I can still get that walk in. But when we can’t walk, I try to do extra housework to get in some activity.

  14. I am so exhausted by the time I get home from work that I can’t get myself going to exercise. However, I find that if I do a little bit throughout the day, it’s not so bad!

  15. I make time every single day to workout. Even if I have to get up early or take a late class at the gym.

  16. Great tips! I have three kids so it’s hard for me to find time; if I do, it’s usually easiest early in the morning or late at night while everyone else is still asleep!
