If you’ve ever had a traditional Cuban sandwich you know that they are so very basic, yet so very delicious.  Having bought them when out in cafe’s on many occasions I decided to see if I could create my own and came up with what I feel is the perfect combination.  While it does require a bit of planning ahead, it is well worth the work to create this Classic Cuban Sandwich for your family.  It’s also a great way to use up leftover pork roast from a family meal on Sunday.

Classic Cuban Sandwich Recipe

Classic Cuban Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups Pulled Pork (leftover slow cooked or purchased already cooked)
  • 6 Thick Slices Dietz & Watson Honey Ham
  • Honey Dijon Mustard (recipe below)
  • 6 Sliced Sandwich Pickles
  • 3 Slices Dietz & Watson Swiss Cheese
  • 1 Large Loaf Crusty Bread
  • Butter For Grill/Sandwich Press

Honey Dijon Mustard:

  • 2 Tablespoon Dijon Mustard
  • 2 Teaspoon Honey
  • 2 Teaspoon Mayonnaise

Directions:

In a small bowl mix together ingredients for Honey Dijon Mustard

Slice crusty bread in half and spread mustard on both sides

Classic Cuban Sandwich

Place pulled pork, then ham, then cheese, then pickles topping with second half of crusty bread.

If you have a sandwich press use it to create a nice flattened and heated through sandwich.  If not, melt butter in large skillet and use another clean skillet or pan to “flatten” sandwich while it cooks, turning once at 3-4 minutes.  Cook sandwich for a total of 6-8 minutes.

Classic Cuban Sandwich

This classic Cuban sandwich is perfect for having with a nice side of potato chips, potato salad or even your favorite macaroni salad.  While a classic seems to have just a hint of yellow mustard, we found the addition of a honey mustard made it more appealing for the kids in the house.  You can use simple yellow or Dijon mustard if you prefer.

I love a good Cuban sandwich. The problem is consistency. You find one you like somewhere, then order it somewhere else and it tastes completely different. I guess that’s a good case for making them yourself – find a set of flavors you like and you can always make it the same way. 🙂 [#TickleMyTasteBuds]

That sounds really good! One of my favorites is an Italian sub swimmin’ in vinegar 😉

This definitely gives you a vinegar taste with the pulled pork (if cooked in vinegar, like we do) and pickle! Italian subs are really yummy, too!
