STUDENTS GO GOURMET: Simple Gourmet for Everyday is a user-friendly cookbook for students learning how to navigate the treacherous path from the cutting board to the oven. Each recipe features an estimation of the price, time, and servings. They reuse some of their favorite gourmet ingredients to save you trips to the grocery store, so follow the chapter on how to stock your pantry and fridge. Check out the Culinary Lingo chapter to become more familiar with cooking terminology. Read their tips on etiquette before attending (or hosting) that all-important lunch or dinner with a prospective boss. Whatever you need to help you in your first steps, this book is there for you!
A little bit about the authors: Sophia Khan is a world traveler and recent graduate of Yale and Harvard who through her studies, Greek and Pakistani ancestry, and cultural experiences has learned to prepare fast and delicious food. Her aunt, Dr. Ellen Bass, a self-proclaimed Francophile, adds her experience as an award-winning pediatrician and working mom to compliment the recipes with fresh and healthy ingredients. Both students of highly acclaimed academic institutions, they understand first-hand the challenges of eating healthy under demanding schedules.
Being a single mommy and a college student (therefore strapped for cash and time) I was thrilled to receive this cookbook. Before I tried any of the recipes out, I watched the instructional DVD included and surprisingly learned a lot about basic cooking skills that I didn’t know before. They teach you tricks like how to keep your cutting board from sliding around, how to use different kinds of knives and the proper way to cut different herbs and foods that are difficult, like mangoes. After looking through all the recipes I decided to try the Pesto Pizza, Caesar Salad with Homemade Croutons and Parmesan Crisps, and the Thyme Truffles. The pizza turned out great and the croutons especially were a hit! The truffles had a very unique taste, having the thyme in them, and were not loved by the picky eaters in my household. However, for those of you who are well traveled and like to try new foods and flavors, I am sure you will love them!! There is a wide variety of food options in this book derived from all over the world. It would be a great Christmas or house warming gift for a loved one!
