I was given the chance to try some Ouchies Bandaids and we really enjoyed using them! When they arrived they boys loved playing with the metal tins opening and closing them and pulling out all the bandaid strips. My 18 month old LOVED the truck set we choose and my 3.5 year old really have fun coloring the Make Your Own set!
Our first chance to use them my 18 month old was playing in the shower opening and closing the sliding doors and smashed his fingers! I was in the bathroom cleaning so I was there with him, but he has been playing with the doors for several months always opening them, running into the shower, and then sliding the door shut and running over to the other door to go out. I didn’t think too much about him playing with them. Well opened the doors to far and too fast and his fingers got pulled with the door under the front door. It ripped off one fingernail and smashed it so it was a bit bruised but nothing critical. It was swelling a bit though and so I grabbed the tin of Ouchies bandaids and put one around the swelling bruised finger and taped it to the finger next to it to brace it a bit so he wouldn’t bend it and knock at his fingers. Then I put one from the front side of his knuckle over his fingertips and back down to the other side to catch the bleeding and protect the fingernail that was ripping off.
He was very upset and crying very heavily but I kept telling him to look at the trucks and “Ooooh! Cool truck!!” He would keep getting distracted and start telling me about the trucks and then remember that he was hurt and cry again. I really think it helped with him to be able to distract him with the bandaid in a positive fun way so he wasn’t thinking about his fingers throbbing for a moment. A standard plain bandaid wouldn’t have been any fun or any good at distracting. He actually didn’t like having the bandaids on so about an hour later they were ripped off but they had served their purpose to stop the bleeding. I also emptied out one of the tins and let him play with it and he found lots of fun toys to put inside, his favorite of which were his hot wheels cars. Luckily we haven’t had another occasion to need to use these again yet but I do think they make having an ouchie that much easier to cope with for the child as it is fun and distracting to have a really cool bandaid on!
