5 Easy Ways Every Mom Can Exercise

So you’ve had a baby, or a few, and now you’re hoping to get back in shape, lose the “baby weight,” and get your pre-baby body back. You don’t need to get a gym membership to exercise and stay healthy. There are a lot of easy ways moms can exercise around the home or neighborhood while involving the kids. But let’s start with a little heart-to-heart.

This post is sponsored by Daily Burn. All opinions and experience are my own.

A Journey With My Weight

I’ve had 5 kids, my oldest is almost 11 and my youngest is nearing 3. I have spent a full decade of my life either pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive. It was a wonderful, and crazy, time of my life, but the changes took a toll on my body, especially as soon as I hit that magical 30th birthday and my metabolism started to change.

A “before” picture taken in Nov 2016 at about 155 lbs. I’m the girl in the middle.

Exercise has always been a struggle for me. I can’t run, I struggle to keep up with high-energy work out routines, and I don’t usually feel comfortable in group fitness classes. In December, I hit my all-time high of 160 pounds. I stared at the scale in disbelief and wanted to cry. My newlywed weight was 110 and I routinely was able to get back to 120-125 after my first few babies. But after a stressful time that overlapped with my 5th baby, and slowly adding extra weight to lose after each of my children, I was surprised to see a number I didn’t ever imagine I would get to. In all fairness, 160 pounds may not see like a lot, but for my height, small bones and frame, and body structure it was a lot of weight for me.

Me in January, I had started thinking about my weight, but wasn’t actively exercising.

My mother-in-law came to visit us in January, and provided the answer – the one many of us moms long for but don’t know how to get to on our own. She was walking – just simply walking – and counting her caloric intake to lose weight. While I hate exercise, I could certainly walk. It is easy and something I can do with my toddler, and was the start of my journey over the past 6 months where I have now lost 27lbs, and I’m still losing.

The thing is, I learned that you don’t have to be busting your butt at the gym, or running a 5k marathon, to start getting into shape. I couldn’t seem to see past those big hurdles in the transition to start taking care of myself. Since my first few weeks walking, I’ve found there are some easy ways that every mom can exercise, even with your kids in tow.

One of my tricks, is using Daily Burn to exercise from home when the weather is terrible or to sneak in a workout when my toddler naps.

5 Easy Ways Every Mom Can Exercise

These 5 easy exercises you can do, even with your kids! Skip the gym membership and try these no-stress not-so-strenuous workout that will make a difference in your overall health and weight loss goals!

1. Use a Fitness Program from Home – Forget the expense gym membership you’re unlikely to commit to and use if you struggle with exercise. Instead, you can pick a workout routine that is accommodated to your fitness level and workout right in your own home. Daily Burn is a really cool option, as it works right from your phone, desktop, or you can stream it to your TV to be flexible and meet your unique needs. The best part is all of the variety, you’re not stuck with just one routine that you’ll quickly tire of or that may not be something you enjoy after you try it.

2. Playground Exercises – Find a park your whole family loves. Let the kids play their hearts out while you make laps around the playground equipment. You can also take advantage of the playground equipment while you’re there. Climb up and down the steps to the slides as a stair climbing exercise. Or do push-ups standing up leaning onto a picnic table to build upper body strength.

3. Walk – Go for a stroller around the neighborhood, walk to the park, or check off your errands by walking to the grocery store, post office, library, or other locations that might be within a couple miles of your home. Walking is easy to do, but it still help you burn calories and build up your endurance.

4. Set a Cleaning Timer – You can get a cardio workout in while rushing around the home tidying up the clutter. Set a :30 minute timer, then aim to get as much done as possible during your time slot. Let the kids help and make it a challenge, with a prize at the end. Maybe a cuddle up on the couch to read books after the cleaning rush.

5. Go for a Family Bike Ride – Riding a bike is really fun! It will bring back all the memories of your youth and allow you to tone muscle while you burn calories. It will also expand the distance you can travel from your home, giving you more options and places to explore close to your home. My husband and I have been going on bike rides together in the evening bringing along our boys. It’s been a welcome break from the busy home life.

My Experience Using Daily Burn

I no longer struggle with hating to exercise. When I took away the stigma from the word that exercise means something beyond what I was capable of, to realizing I can incorporate exercise into everyday activity, everything changed for me. I enjoy getting outdoors to exercise, when I can, but it’s not always possible. Once summer hit, we’ve had really hot and humid days and tons and tons of downpours that have impacted my desire to get outdoors.

That’s where Daily Burn was able to fill in the gaps for me. I can get active in my dry, air conditioned living room with one of the Daily Burn workout programs and still be working towards my goals without feeling like I need to over-do it or keep up with the pressure of a class setting where I’m far behind most participants fitness levels. I don’t feel like I am inadequate when I only have myself to be accountable to.

I decided to get serious in early February and started tracking my weight with an app.
At this point, I was down 3 lbs from my highest weight.

It’s great to have all the flexibility to do yoga out in my backyard when the weather is fantastic, or pick a dance routine when I want to workout inside, there are even easy 10-minute or 15-minute workouts to pick when I’m short on time!

A cleaning timer sounds like such a great idea. I know that it would kind of make the time more fun than daunting.
