6 Tips to keep your family prepared and healthy during the holiday season

1. Get enough sleep

One of the biggest hits to our immune system is not getting enough sleep. During the hustle and bustle, make sure you are getting the rest you need, or getting sick will MAKE you get the rest your body needs.

2. Keep up on your immunizations and flu shots

We’re having a newborn over for our holiday party and because she’s too little to get all the immunizations herself, I wanted to make sure we weren’t exposing her to anything harmful. At the beginning of the month we made sure all the kids were up on their immunizations and flu shots. Our regular pediatrician was crazy busy, so we turned to CVS Minute Clinic for our flu shots. At CVS Minute Clinic, you can make an appointment online, or (like us) just walk in. They tell you how long the approximate wait time is, so you can even do your waiting at home on the couch instead of in the office. The nurse practitioner we saw had lots of great information for me and info on the flu shot we were getting. We were in and out in about 20 minutes!

3. Check expiration dates and restock

Whether you are checking your stock of Echinacea or Vitamin C, or making sure that your trusted cold remedies and pain medication are not expired, you’ll be glad you are prepared when the time comes. There’s nothing worse then thinking you have a medicine cabinet full of everything you need, than to find out everything is expired! The great part of CVS Minute Clinic is that it is INSIDE a PHARMACY!! You can stock up on everything you need all in on spot.

4. Eat your fruits and veggies

It’s easy to not eat regular healthy meals during the holiday season. There’s usually lots of junk food nearby to snack on, and not enough sit down meal time for all the healthy foods. Try keeping a veggie or fruit tray in your refrigerator so you have healthy options when the cravings hit. Keep track of your servings of protein, fruits and vegetables to make sure that you are filling your body with nutrition before enjoying the snacks of the season.

5. Keep extra soap, hand sanitizer, tissues and sanitizing wipes on hand.

It’s a great idea to give your house a once-over (especially doorknobs and light switches) before guests arrive (and really all through the flu season). CVS has great deals on all the items needed to keep you healthy. You can pick them all up in one stop and keep your house stocked for the season.

6. Know when to go to a doctor

Colds can quickly turn into a secondary infection such as a sinus infection, respiratory infection or ear infection. If you are wondering if you or your children might be beyond the regular virus, get in to see a doctor. CVS Minute Clinic can get you a same day appointment or even a walk-in visit. If you are in need of a prescription, it can be filled right there at the pharmacy! What a great one-stop shop during the busiest time of year. They can also send all their findings to your regular provider so your records stay up to date.

Hopefully you can keep your family healthy and happy during this wonderful Holiday Season. Good luck with all of your hosting and celebrations!

Great tips! Sleep and hand sanitizer are big ones in my home - as soon as we miss sleep everyone starts get cranky and sick.

That's pure awesome! It's really important to make sure that the whole family is healthy during the holidays. It would suck to celebrate Christmas when you're down with the flu. A flu shot is important and so are the other tips that you shared here!
