Simple Homemade Bread Bowls Recipe

You know by now that we love soups.  Especially crock pot soups that are easy to make in large batches and freeze for future meals.  One of our favorite ways of serving our soups is with a bread bowl and I have just the recipe for you.  This Simple Homemade Bread Bowls recipe is one that has been handed down on recipe cards to all the women in our family for years.  I don’t know its origin but have encountered many that are very similar. Basic ingredients and only a few minutes to throw together it turns into a luscious bread bowl or could alternately be used for rolls, sandwich rolls or even small loaves.

I like making these while I am already in the kitchen on the weekends fixing a big breakfast for my crew.  I simply set my dough in a covered bowl on the stove after it’s formed and let it rise then pop into the oven later in the day for tasty bread bowls to put the soup I made in the crock pot in for a tasty fully edible meal.  And what mom can argue with fewer dishes to clean up after dinner right?

Mix in vegetable oil, salt and egg whites.

Add in 3.5 to 4 cups flour 1 cup at a time until dough begins to form. Dough will be slightly sticky.

Flour clean surface lightly and turn dough onto surface.  Sprinkle with ½ cup flour.  Knead until smooth and elastic rotating ¼ turn with each motion.  This usually takes 5-7 minutes.

Cover dough and let rise in a warm place.  {I prefer placing dough in a large bowl that has been sprayed with non-stick spray and covering loosely with damp cloth or plastic wrap.

Allow dough to rise doubling in size {typically around 45 minutes to 1 hour}.

Punch dough down and divide into 4 equal pieces.

Pull each piece down and shape into a circle “bowl”.  Make sure seams are on bottom and top is smooth.  My need to pinch seams together or press on surface to form “seal”.

Allow to rise for another 45 minutes to 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Place dough on parchment lined baking sheet or presprayed baking dish and cook for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.

*May desire to brush tops with egg wash midway through baking to help brown more.

These crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside Simple Homemade Bread Bowls are sure to be a hit with any number of soups, stews, chowders or even dips at your next party.  Make a double batch and serve at your next family gathering.

I love that you shared a homemade bread bowl recipe here. I know my husband loves to order these sometimes when we're out. I bet he'd be delighted to find on on the dinner table at home!

I LOVE BREAD BOWLS!! My husband and I are on a soup cleanse right now, which doesn't allow bread, but as soon as I'm off it I'm baking up some bread bowls. Thanks for the recipe!
