Potty Training Q & A

This post is sponsored by Pull-Ups® Training Pants. All opinions are my own.

I have three children: a son and two daughters, ranging in age from five to one. When I potty trained my son, I was prepared for the worst. Everyone told me how awful potty training can be, how messy boys are, how it takes them forever to catch on. When I got ready to train my daughter I received opposite exclamations, “Girls are so easy!” “Girls potty train at an earlier age!” As it turns out, my son’s potty training experience went much more smoothly than my daughter’s. I have since learned that kids potty train based on their personality, not their gender. But, there are still some specific questions to be asked and I’ve got answers from experts to help us out here. Ready for some potty talk?

Q&A

Is your child showing signs of being ready to potty train? Not sure what those signs are? For us, the most obvious one was once they had filled their diaper, they would pull at it and try to remove it. Or they would hide, or tell me they were pooping. Does your child tell you they have gone, are going to go, or are going potty in their diaper? It might be time. Find out more about knowing if your child is ready in this post. Ready to start? I suggest The Pull-Ups® Potty Partnership – A Whole New Way to Potty Train.

This system brings your child into the process as a partner, letting their personality guide the way, to tackle the potty training milestone as a team. Based on research and observation of personality types in young children, Pull-Ups® Training Pants, along with child development expert Dr. Heather Wittenberg, has identified five potty training personalities: Puppy, Owl, Bear Cub, Turtle, and Squirrel. My little girl is an Owl potty personality: determined, busy, and predictable. She pays attention to everyone and everything. Knowing how these character traits contribute to or define the potty training process was so helpful. It taught me to give her directions clearly and in order, since she also concentrates really well when she understands what’s expected. She just needs some guidance and direction, and she’s on her way

You can figure out which potty personality your child best resembles by taking this easy quiz. This will help you customize the potty training journey right from the start. Using their tips, tools and advice, you and your child will be ready for anything and will also have a little fun along the way!

But I don’t have all the answers (don’t tell my kids!). So here are a few questions that I had while potty training my kids that Pull-Ups teamed up with Dr. Heather to answer for you:

What if my child has “Stage Fright”?

Can I just keep them in diapers until they are fully potty trained?

Are girls really faster to train than boys?

Should I train my little boy to stand while peeing?

Pull-Ups® Training Pants are a great tool to help your child recognize potty training as a milestone in their development and give your child the independence to slide their pants on and off all by themselves. To us, they may seem like another form of diaper, but to a toddler they are a sign of independence. What I’ve found most helpful are the easy open sides – because accidents will happen, but it really helps when clean up can be quick and easy.

With three different types of training pants, each with different features, Pull-Ups can be with you every step of the way.  I personally love the Night*Time Training Pants because while my daughter has mastered the day time potty training, she is not quite ready to stay dry all the way through the night yet. This style of Pull-Ups® Training Pants keep her pjs and bed dry with their extra absorbency all night long.

Pull Ups are definitely my "must have" for potty training. It's so true that all kids potty train in different ways. There are so many cool resources for parents these days that weren't available when I was potty training. I think it's great!

Potty training is hard work but I think if the child is ready it makes it so much easier. I remember the days of potty training, so tiring but so rewarding when they finally get it.

Ugh. We are in the thick of potty training my youngest now and it is not fun. My son loves his Pull Ups though and they've really helped with the process!

My first daughter was the worst potty trainer and took forever to stop peeing herself. My son was actually my easiest!
