How to Get Better Sleep

If there’s one thing all parents want no need to know it’s how to get better sleep. The problem is, the answer for a full night of worry-free sleep is to go back to your kid-free days! Seriously. You’re not truly going to get amazing sleep again. Even when the kids move out, you know they’re going to call and wake up your slumber. Despite your little intrusions, there are lots of things you can do to help improve your quality of sleep and help you get the rest you need.

We received a complimentary Novosbed Aria mattress. All opinions are our own.

Tips to Get Better Sleep

How to Get Better Sleep

Your Mattress Matters – As newlyweds, we received a hand-me-down mattress. It was lumpy, broken-in all wrong, and just plain uncomfortable. We ditched that mattress as soon as we could and moved into a nice mattress that didn’t leave our backs aching as we woke up. A good mattress that doesn’t leave you sore is the most important thing for a good night’s sleep.

Lights Out – While our kids may cling to their nightlights, the opposite should be true in your room. Get rid of all the light you can. The darker the room the less distractions you will face as you try to fall asleep.

Screen Free Time – This feels somewhat impossible these days with our constant interactions with our phone, tablets, computers, and TVs, but try to get some time away from a screen before bed. You could use your last minutes of the day to read a paperback book, plan out your next day, chat face-to-face with your sweetie, or stop to mediate or dream for your future!

Soothing Scents – Certain scents can help you relax and unwind. You can spray a room or linen spray in your room or wash your pillow case in a soothing scented detergent.

Mediate – This can tie in with your screen-free time, but it’s worth echoing on it’s own. If you take a few minutes aside from the daily life distractions and just think and work out all your jumbled mess of thoughts it will keep your mind from constantly wandering when you lay down to sleep. You can mediate at any point in your day, even when you’re waiting in the school pick-up queue!

Early to Bed – Night owl or early riser, don’t stay up too late or you won’t get enough sleep which tends to start the cycle over again. Find a reasonable hour that works for you as a bedtime and try your best to stick to it. For me, I aim for 10 pm. Your bedtime may be totally different, and that’s okay.

Pick Your Pillow – It took me a long time to find a pillow I liked. I’ve been through so many different types and styles. I have one that I love now and it makes such a difference for a good night’s sleep. Everyone’s preferences in this area will be totally different, so keep searching until you find your perfect match!

Temperature & Moving Air – Keep your room cool during the summer months and don’t overheat your home in the evenings during the winter. A cool room with a pile of comfy blankets will help you sleep more soundly. Keeping air moving with a fan or a gentle breeze from an open window can help your room feel cool and keep you comfortable and asleep.

Waking up Gently – If you have to be up as early as the sun, keep your curtains or blinds open to let in a bit of light. You don’t need to be flooded with daylight, but if you let a bit of natural light come in with the rise of the sun you’ll wake up subtly and will feel much more rested than waking up abruptly during the wrong part of your sleep cycle. You can also get daylight alarms nowadays that will give the same effect.

Meeting Our Mattress

We have had the opportunity to test out a Novosbed Aria Mattress. It arrived all rolled up tight in a HEAVY box. We caught the mailman trying to lug the box to our front door on our security cameras – the footage was priceless! It is truly amazing that they can mail a mattress all rolled and fit it into a normal size box. It reshaped to a mattress form and thickness quickly. The box arrived late morning and we had it setup and ready to sleep on by that night!

We choose their Aria mattress, their most popular model, after a recommendation from their product team. We wanted a mattress that felt firm to support our backs but still be comfortable for me as a side sleeper. We also wanted a mattress that would keep our temperature cool with the warm weather we have here. The medium-firmness has been perfect for us! I wasn’t sure if I would have wanted something even firmer along the scale but it is absolutely perfect for us.

The Aria mattress is very supportive but still has give and I haven’t awoken with a sore back since the first night. After night one, I was a bit tense from adjusting to a totally different mattress, but I haven’t looked back since! My previous mattress would always leave my shoulder sore when I slept on my side by that isn’t an issue at all with the Aria mattress. We couldn’t be happier!

I need to limit the screen time before bed. I often watch tv and play games on my phone right before I go to sleep.

We don't have a television in our bedroom. I write about entertainment for a living and I don't have a television in my bedroom. However it's because my bedroom is meant for sleeping.
