Erupting Volcano Birthday Cake

I think most kids go through a dinosaur phase. Can you blame them? They are pretty amazing creatures to learn about! When my son decided he wanted to have a dinosaur party for his fifth birthday, I was pretty excited. There were so many fun things I wanted to do!  When he told me he wanted to have a working volcano birthday cake, I started feeling a little overwhelmed.

But, as it turns out, the hardest part about making this cake is finding the dry ice! This cake looks awesome, it is a huge hit with the kids, and it comes together really easily! You can do it too! Here is how I put it together:

I started by stacking up a combination of dishes and pans that would look roughly like a volcano when assembled. Here is what I came up with:

1 Bundt Pan

2 8 in cake pans

7 in bowl

Prepare your cakes in the pans. Allow to cool completely. The trickiest part of this cake is creating the well to hold your dry ice. Coat the inside of your bowl with non-stick spray. Place a cup that is about the same height as your bowl upside down in the bowl. Make your Rice Krispie treats and pack then around the cup, filling the bowl. This will sit on the top of your cake and the dry ice will sit inside of the cup.

Using frosting, assemble your layers. You can use wooden skewers to stabilize your layers if you want, I didn’t find that it was tall enough to worry about it. Once it is all stacked go ahead and decorate it. I used store bought chocolate frosting for the mountain and homemade royal icing to create the lava and water. Add some dollar store dinosaur figures and greenery for a really fun affect.

Right before your guests arrive, add a chunk of dry ice and hot water to the top of your cup. You can repeat as often as you need to to keep your fog rolling. It is handy to keep a syringe or baster near by to remove excess water from the cup as the it cools from the dry ice.

There you have it! An impressive looking, but easily made, show stopper of a volcano birthday cake!
