My husband loves to be outdoors and has many outdoor hobbies including hiking, scuba diving, swimming, and climbing. Just recently, he told me he wanted to get a bike to be able to stay fit and enjoy the beautiful fall and winter weather we have here in Arizona. I love the idea of a family bike riding trip with the little ones in a bike trailer and my husband and I getting some good exercise in while having fun. However, I worry about the busy roads and traffic. There aren’t many good trails through parks around here unless we drive quite a ways. For those of you that bike with your family in the city, do you have any tips or tricks that you’ve found to keep bike riding fun and safe for the whole family?

Leisure Lakes Bikes

I ride to work daily on a commuter bike and do longer rides on a road bike. My suggestion would be to find a bike that fits well and to find an advocacy group, club, or League of American Bicyclist Instructor (bikeleague.org) to find a road skills class or some beginner rides/clinics to get you started. They can help you find safe routes and teach you how to handle riding on the roads safely.

Also, some kiddos love trail-a-bikes which work out pretty well if you live somewhere that doesn’t have lots of separate bike facilities.
