I have been researching laptops and pouring over the different specs trying to find a laptop that would serve me well and not be quickly outdated with the improvements in technology. I finally decided on a laptop that would suit my needs well but it was lacking in RAM memory with two RAM cards with different capacities. I had read online that having different memory capacities would make my laptop read at the slowest of the speeds for each of the memory cards installed. I also read that it can cause stability issues to mix and match different sizes or even brands. My laptop came configured with a 4 GB and 2 GB sticks of RAM memory. I wanted to be able to have the max capacity for my laptop which was 8 GB RAM. Installing two Kingston ValueRAM 4 GB sticks was really easy to do! It took just a few screws and then it was as easy as sliding them into place where my old RAM was. My laptop recognized the memory when I turned my computer back on and I have had no issues at all. Kingston’s website explains that, “Additional memory will not necessarily increase the performance of your computer. It will allow you to run more programs or processes at once or more memory intensive programs. There may be a performance increase if the original amount of memory installed was close to insufficient for the programs and processes you use the computer for.” I tend to have a lot of programs open at once including outlook, firefox, picasa, word, skype, and others and I have noticed really quick responsive loading times for all my programs with the new configuration.
Next, I wanted to upgrade my hard drive to a Solid-State drive. Reading up on the differences, I knew I would be really happy with a Solid-State drive. Here is information directly from Kingston on a SSDNow V200 Solid-State Drive (SSD), “SSDNow drives can extend the lifecycle and dramatically improve the performance of a PC with higher speeds, greater stability and legendary Kingston® reliability. From booting up to opening applications, SSDNow significantly cuts down waiting time. Best of all, with no moving parts, SSDNow drives are shock-proof, maintaining stability through the roughest conditions and extending the life of your desktop or notebook.” My laptop turns on completely from off to the login screen in about 3 seconds! It is amazingly fast at start-up and in loading my programs too, I have absolutely noticed a difference! It was simple to make the switch from hard drive to the SSD drive. Again, with a few extra screws and removing the storage case that holds the hard drive it was extremely simple to switch out my drive into the included hard drive enclosure. Since the SSD drive included this enclosure I was able to keep my other hard drive for all my other files and keep only system program files on the SSD. Since I am set up over my home network, I keep all my files now on that external drive so I can easily access all my files from either my desktop or laptop!
