In her picture book debut, Jeanne Blackmore continues her grandfather Roger Duvoisin’s tradition of creating beautiful books for children. Through her poetic and deceptively simple text, Blackmore has created an ideal sleepy time tale:

How does sleep come?” Jacob asked his Mama as he climbed into bed. Jacob’s Mama tucked the covers all around Jacob just so, and then she told him. “Sleep comes quietly. Like a snowfall that blankets a meadow on a dark starry night, and lays down a soft white canvas for rabbits to leave footprints.”

Jacob closed his eyes.
And the snow fell.
And the fog rolled in.
And the clouds drifted.
And the cat purred.
And quietly, silently, softly, peacefully, gently, Jacob fell asleep.

I love being able to read new children’s books to my kids and hearing their reactions to the pictures and story.  How Does Sleep Come? was a delightful, sweet book with absolutely gorgeous pictures.  The descriptive words that Jeanne Blackmore uses to describe sleep make you feel like relaxing and heading off into dreamland!  This was a fantastic bedtime story to read to my kids.  My daughters loved the baby, Jacob, and his cute pajamas and hair.  They also had fun trying to remember which line came next in the poem.  My son loved the pictures of the rabbits and kittens.  Each illustration was detailed and rich in color.  The blue hues used to paint the night sky on every page were beautiful and the words of the poem matched the paintings perfectly.  I would recommend How Does Sleep Come? to anyone who loves reading bedtime stories to their children!

How Does Sleep Come? can be purchased at the Sourcebooks Store for $16.99.
