The DivaCup is a great alternative to handling your menstrual flow that offers an eco-friendly reuseable option. Here is some great information about the DivaCup directly from their website:
The DivaCup is a non-absorbent menstrual cup that simply collects menstrual flow. It is inserted in the vagina and sits at the lower base of the vaginal canal. It is worn internally, yet because it is soft and smooth, it cannot be felt nor will it leak when inserted properly. The DivaCup is the most clean and convenient method of feminine hygiene protection. No need to touch the flow. It is worn low in the vagina, not near the cervix, so it is easy to remove. No mess! The DivaCup ends hassles with unreliable disposables in endless absorbencies, shapes and styles. It is perfect for all activities – giving women true freedom without the worry, guessing and unreliability that disposable feminine hygiene products pose. The DivaCup can be worn for up to 12 hours before emptying, washing and reinserting for use for another 12 hours. It can be used for light or moderate flows and is emptied more often to accommodate heavy flows. Perfect for overnight use.
Features of the DivaCup:
- Latex-free, BPA-free, plastic-free
- No dyes, colors or additives
- Comfortable, reliable
- Clean, convenient, easy-to-use
- Worn for up to 12 hours at a time
I received a DivaCup to review. Having been pregnant or nursing almost the entirety of my 6 years of marriage I was surprise, and very unhappy, with the disposable options available when I finally started back onto my cycle. I wasn’t really happy with tampons or disposable pads. When I first heard about The DivaCup, I’ll admit, I thought it was a bit weird and seemed extremely messy. That put me on a hunt, though, and after ready tons of reviews online and seeing how extremely highly rated menstrual cups are I was ready to try one for myself. Before my cycle started I checked out some YouTube “tutorials” that use a clean glass tube to demonstrate and discuss the use of a menstrual cup. This helped me tremendously as I leaned about folds and positioning. Then, I gave the cup a try a few times prior to my cycle to get a bit of an idea what I would be doing when the time came.

When my cycle arrived, I actually did pretty well using the cup. I did have a few times where I would think it was properly sealed in place only to stand up and start to walk and just feel and know it wasn’t and I would need to start over. There is definitely a learning curve to menstrual cups. By the end of my cycle, though, it was much easier to place. I got my period right during my 3 days of traveling which could have been the worst time ever, but actually ended up being just fine since I had The DivaCup. I didn’t have to pack loads of feminine care products along with me and I could travel all through the airport and flights without worrying about needing to worry about my protection. Emptying The DivaCup can be a bit messy, though, which is in my opinion its biggest “downside” that you have to be willing to deal with to be successful using the cup. When I was at the hotel it wasn’t a big deal at all as I could easily wash and clean the DivaCup before needing to reinsert it and had all the time I needed to freshen up. When I was out and about, though, I didn’t feel comfortable with the idea of adjusting or emptying out The DivaCup. Luckily, the cup can last for up to 12 hours, so you may not ever need to change out your cup away from home. I really liked using The DivaCup and despite the learning curve and more “hands on” approach to the mess, I will absolutely be using my cup again for all my future periods! I know it will only get easier with experience and I felt like it was a more efficient and actually cleaner (no underwear messes) way to handle my menstrual cycle.
You can find the DivaCup through a variety of retailers by using their Store Finder to find online or local stores. The DivaCup is also available through Amazon. The DivaCup has a suggested retail price of $39.99 but often is listed for around $25 on Amazon. Since the DivaCup comes in two sizes, be sure you check which size will be best for you.
