Princess Recovery Book Review & Giveaway

Jennifer L. Hartstein, PsyD, author of Princess Recovery: A How-To Guide to Raising Strong, Empowered Girls Who Can Create Their Own Happily Ever Afters, a child and adolescent psychologist, is a regular correspondent for The Early Show. She has also appeared on Fox News, The Today Show, and Headline News. Dr. Hartstein uses a variety of treatment approaches that promote strong self-awareness, distress tolerance, and acceptance.

Raising independent, confident girls today is not easy – but concerned parents can curb the outside world’s influence on their daughters. With expert child psychologist’s Dr. Hartstein’s unique program, parents can counteract society’s pressure without making their girls live in a bubble. “Princess Recovery” will help parents raise strong, sweet daughters when they: encourage them to pursue their passion with industry and intelligence; establish high but realistic expectations of themselves and their future; provide context for problematic influences – from the media to prissy peers; and, build a mutual trust that will withstand adolescent growing pains. With this plan, parents can bring balance, confidence, and self-sufficiency into their daughters’ lives without denying them a modern, vibrant childhood.

I really enjoyed reading this book and felt it has some very insightful points and tips to raising daughters. This is very helpful for me since I have 3 daughters and want to do everything I can to help them have self-confidence and a successful, happy life. A lot of it is being a good, active parent, and being involved in your child’s life, but I like how she shows you how to focus on their interests and intelligence instead of just looks. I really like the part where she talks about Barbie dolls, and says instead of focusing on the negative and just saying Barbies are bad, play with your daughter and ask her what kind of job Barbie might have, what she likes to play, and who her friends are… instead of what Barbie is wearing and when Ken is coming home. It is also helpful that there is an index in the back of the book to help you use it as a reference for difference topics as well, like dieting, grandparents, and gratitude. This is a great book, that every parent should read if they are raising a daughter!
