I was so excited to get to work with Brother USA to review a serger! I learned how to both sew and use a serger in college but haven’t had the opportunity to work with a serger since. Two years ago I asked for a sewing machine for Christmas and received a Brother sewing machine which has spurred a ton of creative projects from blankets to burp cloths and many more projects! I even tried making cloth diaper inserts but struggled to make a really high quality finished edge without a lot of extra unnecessary bulk for my inserts with only a sewing machine. When the Brother Serger arrived the first project I had in mind was to finally make my bamboo cloth diaper inserts I had been putting off for the past few months.

I worried a little bit about the learning curve of trying out a new serger since it had been a few years since I last worked with one. I read through the instruction manual and was ready to give it a shot! I was thrilled that the Brother 1034D Serger was so incredibly easy start using! I was also blown away by how fast it was to make my diaper inserts with really hardly any effort on my part! The serger has a built in retractable knife blade that will trim the edge right before being serged for a professional and clean edge with all the fabrics aligning just right. For projects where you may not want to trim the edge, you can easily turn off the knife blade. When it comes to re-threading the serger, which seems to be the most difficult part of a serger, the Brother 1034D has a built it guide that shows you just where to thread each of the 4 threads. While there are a lot of steps to threading the 3rd and 4th thread lines, it isn’t impossible with the easy guide that takes you one step at a time through the process. It took me 2 tries but I was really surprised, once again, with how easy it is. The most important thing is to thread in the proper order so follow the instruction manual until you learn the proper steps to threading.
This serger does everything I want and need it to do and is offered at such an affordable priced compared to most sergers. I am extremely happy with the Brother 1034D serger and I’m already dreaming up my next project!

The Brother 1034D Serger can be found on Amazon, Walmart or Sears. It has a suggested retail price of $189.00.
