A Caesar Approved Beginners’ Guide to Sign Language

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is Arriving on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download December 13th

In Rise of Planet of the Apes, Caesar communicates through sign language. Sign language is a unique and expressive language that is unlike any other (and is different in virtually every country). Here, we’ll create a simple beginners’ guide to learning American Sign Language (with instructional images). Here you can learn five basic words and expressions, such as “Thank you,” “Yes,” and “I love you.”

 “What Is Your Name?”
Sign language relies heavily on your body language and facial expressions. You can sign, “Name” with squinted eyebrows and your head titled slightly forward to mean, “What is your name?” To do this, you make the “H” handshape on both hands and make a double movement, like in the images shown above.

 “I Love You”
The sign for the phrase, “I love you,” combines the handshapes for the letters “I,” “L” and “Y” into one handshape. You create this sign by extending the thumb, index finger, and little finger while the middle and ring finger touch the palm (see the above image).

 “Yes”
To sign the word “Yes,” you make an “S” handshape, and you then raise and lower your fist to say the word. It is easiest to think of your fist as a head, which nods the “S” shape to say, “Yes,” as in the images above.

 “Nice to Meet You”
The phrase, “Nice to meet you” is actually signed as “Nice meet.” You sign this phrase by using both of your hands and sliding your right hand forward across your upturned left palm (like in the photo above). Next, you hold your index fingers up, palms facing, and bring your hands together until they meet (see the above illustration). These two motions create the phrase, “Nice to meet you.”

 “Thank You”
If you want to say, “Thank you” in sign language, imagine blowing a kiss to someone. Start with a flat hand with your fingers near your lips, and then move your hand down towards the person you want to thank and, of course, smile (see the above photos)! If you use two hands, this means you are very thankful.

I can’t wait to see this!  I was a teenager when I read the original book and sat through a Planet of the Apes movie marathon.  Of course we have the Mark Wahlburg version.  This should be very entertaining!  I noticed the effects are done by the company that handled Avatar–very good.
