As families gather together to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, Scholastic Storybook Treasures offers a wonderful accompaniment to the turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce with GIVING THANKS…AND MORE STORIES TO CELEBRATE AMERICAN HERITAGE.

Teaching American history and friendship skills, the DVD include four stories to help celebrate what makes our country great, including the recent Parent’s Choice Award winner “Lincoln & Douglass: An American Friendshipâ€Â by Nikki Giovanni, narrated by Danny Glover. Other stories include “Giving Thanksâ€, “Hiawatha†and Marcia Sewall’s “The Pilgrims of Plimouthâ€, which dramatically chronicles the arrival of the Pilgrims in the New World. Bonus Features include the popular Read Along Function, and an interview with “Lincoln and Douglass†author Giovanni.

THE PIGEON FINDS A HOT DOG…AND MORE STORIES BY MO WILLEMS. In the lead story — an animated adaptation of the sequel to his best-selling “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!†– Pigeon finds a delicious hot dog, but a sly and hungry duckling comes along who also wants a bite. Who will be the more clever bird? Find out in this fast, funny feature, narrated by Mo and his daughter, Trixie. Additional stories on the DVD include “Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity†and “Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressedâ€, both of which are also narrated by Willems and Trixie.

On November 22, Scholastic Storybook Treasures will pay homage to the prestigious award with CALDECOTT FAVORITES, a 3-disc set featuring timeless adaptations of some of the 20th Century’s best loved children’s literature. Perfect for building early reading skills, the set features the ever-popular enhanced read along function, bonus stories and Spanish versions of “The Snowy Dayâ€, “Whistle for Wille†and “Make Way for Ducklingsâ€.
All of these DVDs are really great and fun for my girls to watch. The Giving Thanks stories helped me explain Thanksgiving better and teach my daughter a lot about Native American history and American leaders. I loved the visuals and way they put the stories together. The Pigeon Finds a Hotdog was hilarious, but my daughter’s favorite on that DVD was the Knuffle Bunny. The animation and storyline is really cute. We are also big fans of a lot of the books featured on Caldecott Favorites, so it made it especially fun to watch Make Way for Ducklings and Snowy Day. One really cool feature to both of these DVDs is the Read-Along feature. It’s perfect for beginner readers to hear the words as they read along. As always, it is so nice to have some good educational, moral cartoons for my girls
Giving Thanks and The Pigeon Finds a Hotdog retail for $14.95 and Caldecott Favorites retails for $24.95. Both DVDs can be purchased online here.
